At AUB, Moodle is being used as a tool for web-enhanced courses. The Moodle portion of the course enriches the learning experience of students by providing them a place to retrieve course information, submit assignments, share information, interact through discussions and sit for online exams.

Moodle Features:
Course Calendar: Displays site, course, group and user events
Quizzes and Self-Tests: Instructors can design and set quizzes containing multiple choice, true-false, short answer, essay, matching and calculated questions. These questions are kept in a categorized database and can be re-used within courses and even between courses
Discussion Forums: Forums can be structured in different ways and can include peer ratings for each posting. The postings can be viewed in a variety for formats and can include attachments. By subscribing to a forum, participants will receive copies of each new posting in their AUB email
Wikis: A wiki enables documents to be authored collectively in a simple way using a web browser
Chat: The chat activity allows participants to have a real-time synchronous discussion via the web
Glossaries: This activity allows participants to create and maintain a list of definitions, like a dictionary
Assignments: Students can prepare digital content (any format) and submit it by uploading it to the server. Typical assignments include essays, projects, reports and so on. This module includes grading facilities
Choice: The choice tool can be used as a quick poll to stimulate thinking about a topic; to allow the class to vote on a direction for the course; or to gather research consent
Resources: Resources are content: information that the teacher wants to bring into the course. They can be uploaded to Moodle in PowerPoint, Word, Excel, PDF, audio, videos or flash formats; or composed directly in Moodle as books (simple multipage documents) or webpages
Groups: This feature helps the instructor divide his/her class into groups and assign different activities to the different groups
Questionnaire: The questionnaire module allows you to construct questionnaires (surveys) using a variety of question types for the purpose of gathering data from users
Integrated Instant Messaging: This tool allows you to communicate with any AUB user who has a Moodle account. It is a one-to-one communication tool
Student Tracking: Instructors can track the activities of students and designers in their courses using the reports tool found in the administration block
Gradebook: This feature allows the instructor to manage all of the grades of the students in his/her course
SCORM/AICC Packages: A package is a bundle of web content grouped according to the SCORM or AICC standard for learning objects. These packages can include web pages, graphics, Javascript programs, Flash presentations and anything else that works in web browsers
Turnitin: The famous plagiarism detection tool is now integrated with Moodle to allow students and instructors to submit their files to Turnitin via Moodle
Database Activity: The database activity allows the teacher and/or students to build, display and search a bank of entries about any conceivable topic. The format and structure of these entries can be almost unlimited, including images, files, URLs, numbers and text, among other things
Hands-on Moodle This course was created and is maintained by ACC. It contains examples of the various Moodle activities and resources. It provides members of the AUB community with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with everything that Moodle offers in a user-friendly and straighforward environment. To access this course:
Recent changes to the course since the last login can be displayed on the course home page. This helps to develop a sense of community to users
Most text entry areas (resources, forum postings, journal entries, etc.) can be edited using an embedded WYSIWYG HTML editor
All grades for forums, quizzes and assignments can be viewed on one page (and downloaded as a spreadsheet file)
Full user logging and tracking - One-page activity reports for each student are available with graphs and details about each module (last access, number of times read) as well as a detailed "story" of each student's involvement including postings, journal entries, etc.
Mail integration - copies of forum posts, teacher feedback, etc. can be mailed in HTML or plain text
Custom scales - teachers can define their own scales to grade forums, assignments and journals
Courses can be packaged as a single zip file using the Backup function. These can be restored on any Moodle server
