Mission
The mission of the Division of Pulmonary Critical Care and Sleep Medicine is to deliver excellent care to our patients locally and from around the region. Our practice is founded on state-of-the-art, evidence based medicine, and is integrated with teaching, clinical training, and research. We provide consultative, diagnostic, and therapeutic services for the full spectrum of pulmonary diseases, sleep disorders, and critical care illness.
Vision
The Division of Pulmonary Critical Care and Sleep Medicine is devoted to excellence in patient care, postgraduate subspecialty training, and research. Our vision is to be one of the best in the region by fulfilling a comprehensive academic mission, and improving the health and health care of our patients while providing safe, high quality care.
SERVICES AND DIVISIONS
The clinical expertise of the six full-time faculty members in the division covers a broad range of pulmonary and critical care medicine, including asthma, obstructive and restrictive lung disease, pulmonary physiology, sleep apnea, and all aspects of Intensive Care unit (ICU) medicine.
The department offers various services that include in addition to all ICU related procedures
Physiologic assessment of the respiratory system
- Pulmonary function tests at rest and during exercise
- Allergy skin testing
- Polysomnography
Diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including
- Diagnostic bronchoscopy
- Transbronchial lung biopsy(TBLB)
- Transbronchial needle aspiration biopsy (TBNA)
- Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL)
- Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS)
- Bronchial and tracheal stent placement
- Argon photocoagulation
- Percutaneous tracheostomy diagnostic and therapeutic thoracentesis
- Pleural biopsy

EDUCATION
- The division is strongly committed to providing the best possible educational environment and learning opportunities for AUB medical students, house staff, and fellowship trainees. Daily formal bedside attending rounds are conducted on all our services for medical students, residents, and pulmonary fellows. These are complemented by an extensive yearlong conference schedule.
- The division’s rigorous Pulmonary Critical Care Fellowship Program is designed to train physicians in advanced diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, relevant lung disease and critical illnesses.
