30 Nov AUB to name Outpatient Surgery Center after Tanios and Souraya Semaan
The American University of Beirut (AUB) has announced it has received a $10 million donation from the Semaan Foundation to name the AUBMC’s Outpatient Surgery Center after the late Tanios and Souraya Semaan.
Tanios Semaan was born in Deir Deghaya in South Lebanon. He married Souraya El-Khoury in 1941 and they had 7 children – Mary, Nadia, Georges, Semaan, Nasra, Maroun and Saydeh. Tanios and Souraya Semaan were strong believers in education and philanthropy—traits they have passed on to their children and 23 grandchildren.
The Tanios and Souraya Semaan Outpatient Surgery Center is a 2,000 square meter facility dedicated to outpatient (same-day) surgical procedures. It will be located on the ninth floor of AUBMC’s new building, the Halim and Aida Daniel Academic and Clinical Center. It will be dedicated in the second quarter of 2017.
The Center will be comprised of a pre-operative area, three state-of-the-art operating theatres, a recovery area, a pharmacy, and other support facilities. The Tanios and Souraya Semaan Outpatient Surgery Center will be easily accessible, and designed to be comfortable and convenient for patients.
The Semaan Foundation was established in 2011 by AUB Trustee Maroun Semaan. The Semaan Foundation provides philanthropic support in the fields of education, hospitalization, and social welfare.
Mr. Semaan graduated from AUB with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1977. He has been an active member of AUB’s Board of Trustees since 2013. Until recently, Mr. Semaan served on the Board of Trustees of the American University of Sharjah. He is also a founding member of the Arab Forum for Environment and Development. Mr. Semaan is a co-founder of Petrofac International, a FTSE 100 company. He served as its president when he retired in December 2013.
“We are very grateful to the Semaan Foundation as their support will enable AUB’s patients to experience world-class care in the outpatient surgical setting, and will ensure that our best and brightest surgeons, physicians, nurses, and trainees have the best possible setting to practice medicine. This is indeed a generous and impactful gift,” said AUB President, Dr. Fadlo R. Khuri.
“This is a critical step in the realization of AUBMC’s 2020 vision which seeks to elevate the quality of care at our medical center to equal that of the best in the world,” said Dr. Mohamed H. Sayegh, Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs and Global Strategies, and Raja N. Khuri Dean for the Faculty of Medicine. “Thanks to the generosity of the Semaan Foundation, we can equip our outstanding faculty and team with the facilities necessary to make this into a reality.”
Trustee Maroun Semaan thanked President Khuri and EVP/Dean Mohamed Sayegh for giving “the opportunity to honor the life and legacy of Tanios and Souraya Semaan in such a fitting manner. This is indeed in line with my beliefs and the objectives of the Semaan Foundation”.
